What is E85?
E85 is a blend of up to 85 % bioethanol with petrol, with the ethanol share cut back in winter so the engine will start cold. Only factory flex-fuel cars, or cars with an approved conversion kit, can run on it: in an ordinary petrol engine it attacks seals and fuel lines.
You pay by the litre, but consumption rises by 20 to 30 % against 95 octane petrol, so the sum only works in euros per hundred kilometres. In Spain it is close to a curiosity, with a handful of pumps nationwide, nothing like the French or Swedish networks.
