Autogas is sold in Spain as GLP, short for gases licuados del petróleo, and the pump is usually signed autogás. The national median right now is 1.109 €/l, against 1.839 €/l for unleaded 95 and 1.809 €/l for diesel. Prices come from the Ministry's daily file and move every day; this page was last refreshed at 3 Sept 2026, 23:31.

What you are actually buying

Spanish automotive LPG is a propane and butane blend. Annex VII of Real Decreto 61/2006 sets its specification: a minimum motor octane number of 89, a maximum of 50 mg/kg of sulphur, at least 20 % C3 and at most 80 % C4 by volume. Density is left without minimum or maximum limits, which matters more than it sounds: the propane to butane ratio varies, and the energy in a litre with it.

Real Decreto 61/2006, article 5 and Annex VII: specification of GLP de automoción (BOE)

At European level, the quality of the product behind that pump is described by EN 589. CEN files it under the gaseous identifiers, which apply to "gaseous fuels, including liquefied gaseous products, which quality is for instance described in EN 589".

CEN-CENELEC - European fuel labels: gaseous fuel identifiers and EN 589

Finding the pump is easy once you know the shapes. The harmonised EN 16942 identifier has applied to Spanish refuelling points since 12 October 2018, on the dispensers and on their nozzles: a circle for petrol, a square for diesel, a rhombus for gaseous fuels. Autogas takes the rhombus. The DGT's advice is to check that the label on the dispenser matches the one on your car.

The words on the price board

Three names do most of the work on a Spanish forecourt, and they are the ones the Ministry uses in its official product list:

  • Gases licuados del petróleo, abbreviated GLP and signed autogás: the fuel on this page.
  • Gasolina 95 E5: unleaded 95, spoken and written as sin plomo 95. The excise law calls the whole family gasolinas sin plomo.
  • Gasóleo A, listed as gasóleo A habitual: ordinary road diesel. Gasóleo B and gasóleo C are separate products in Real Decreto 61/2006, for agricultural and fishing use and for heating, not for cars.
MITECO - official list of fuel products in the price dataset (GLP, Gasolina 95 E5, Gasóleo A habitual)

Two more words are worth knowing. Spanish rules define an instalación en autoservicio as one where staff are present but the customer works the pump, and an instalación desatendida as one with nobody supervising the supply, all day or part of it. A desatendida site authorises the pump through a terminal taking notes or a bank card, so carry a card that works abroad.

Today's LPG price against unleaded 95 and diesel

The three medians side by side, with how many stations sell each product and the cheapest price recorded for it:

The gap between autogas and its fossil reference is currently -0.730 €/l. Nationally there are 979 refuelling points selling GLP, across 50 provinces and 233 brands - a network worth checking against your route before you rely on it.

These are not estimates: operators of publicly accessible refuelling points must report their location and public prices to the Ministry, and GLP is one of the products in that open dataset.

Why a litre of autogas costs less: the duty

The pump price gap is mostly a tax gap, written into article 50 of the Spanish excise law.

Petrol and diesel are taxed by volume. Under the permanent tariff, epígrafe 1.2.2 puts 400,69 euros per 1,000 litres of general rate plus 72 euros per 1,000 litres of special rate on ordinary unleaded petrol, and epígrafe 1.3 puts 307 euros plus 72 euros per 1,000 litres on diesel for general use. That is roughly 47 and 38 cents of duty on every single litre, before VAT.

Autogas is taxed by weight. Epígrafe 1.6, GLP para uso general, is 57,47 euros per tonne, and no special rate is added. A tonne of liquefied propane and butane is a great many litres, so the duty in a litre of autogas is small change beside those figures.

Ley 38/1992, article 50: Tarifa 1.ª, epígrafes 1.2.2, 1.3 and 1.6 (BOE)

VAT then multiplies the difference rather than levelling it. The general rate is 21 %, and the taxable base expressly includes any other tax levied on the same transaction, excise duties included. You pay VAT on the duty.

Ley 37/1992, articles 78.Dos.4º and 90.Uno: taxable base and general VAT rate (BOE)

The petrol and diesel rates above are the permanent ones. Real Decreto-ley 18/2026 temporarily replaced the whole of Tarifa 1.ª for July, August and September 2026 with lower figures for the liquid fuels: for September, 358,31 plus 64,38 euros per 1,000 litres on ordinary unleaded and 266,50 plus 62,50 euros per 1,000 litres on diesel, cut further if an INE inflation trigger is met. Autogas stayed at 57,47 euros per tonne in all three months, so the structure is unchanged. Article 7 covers 1 to 30 September 2026 only; for any other date, check the rate then in force in the BOE.

The number that matters is euros per 100 km, not per litre

This is where visiting drivers get the sum wrong. A litre of LPG holds less energy than a litre of petrol, so a bi-fuel car burns more litres over the same distance.

Take the manufacturer's own homologation figures for one car. Dacia publishes WLTP values for the Sandero Expression ECO-G 120 of 5,4 l/100 km on petrol and 6,8 l/100 km on LPG - about a quarter more litres on gas. The two 50-litre tanks give 926 km on petrol and 735 km on LPG, 1,661 km combined.

So the sum has two steps, not one. Multiply each median by your own car's consumption on that fuel, then compare the results per 100 km. A per-litre price that looks dramatically lower is not a saving of the same size once the extra volume is added back: normally still a saving, but a smaller one than the board suggests. Take your consumption figures from the manufacturer.

Spanish law recognises the problem. Article 7 of Real Decreto 639/2016 says that where a station indicates fuel prices - naming natural gas and hydrogen in particular - the unit-price comparison shall also be displayed for information "both in their usual units of measurement and in energy units", so they can be compared with conventional fuels on a like-for-like basis.

Where the price varies inside Spain

There is no single national price: the median moves by province and by brand, and the gap between the cheapest and the dearest point in the country is wider than most drivers expect.

Before you drive in

Three things worth settling before the border.

  • The filler connector. Fittings are not standardised across Europe, so the adapter that works at home may not fit in Spain. What to carry is covered in LPG adapters in Spain: which connector you need.
  • How a Spanish station works. Self-service and unattended sites are normal here and catch out first-time visitors. See LPG in Spain is called GLP or autogas: how to find it.
  • The route itself. Coverage is uneven away from the main corridors, and shuttle, ferry, tunnel and car park operators each set their own conditions for LPG vehicles: check the ones you plan to use. See Driving to Spain with an LPG car: coverage, prices, forecourts.

Frequently asked questions

What is LPG called in Spain?

GLP, short for gases licuados del petróleo. On signs and price boards you will also see autogás, and the Ministry's own product list calls it Gases licuados del petróleo. Spanish law calls the automotive grade GLP de automoción and sets its specification in Annex VII of Real Decreto 61/2006. On the dispenser the harmonised European identifier is the rhombus used for gaseous fuels, not the petrol circle or the diesel square.

Why is LPG so much cheaper per litre than petrol in Spain?

Mostly tax. Article 50 of Ley 38/1992 taxes unleaded petrol and diesel by volume, per 1,000 litres, and adds a special rate on top. LPG for general use sits in epígrafe 1.6 and is taxed by weight, at 57,47 euros per tonne, with no special rate. VAT at 21 % is then charged on a base that already includes the excise duty, so the duty gap is amplified at the pump.

Does a car use more LPG than petrol per 100 km?

Yes, on a bi-fuel car. Dacia publishes WLTP figures of 5,4 l/100 km on petrol and 6,8 l/100 km on LPG for the same Sandero ECO-G 120, about a quarter more litres. That is why the per-litre price gap is not the saving: compare cost per 100 km instead. Figures for your own car should be checked with the manufacturer.

Can I use my European LPG car in Spain without an adapter?

Not necessarily. Filling connectors are not standardised across Europe, so a car filled in one country may need an adapter in another. Carry the adapters for the countries on your route and check the fitting before you travel; our guide on LPG adapters in Spain covers what to look for.

Where do the prices on this page come from?

From the daily price file published by the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge on datos.gob.es. Operators of publicly accessible refuelling points are required by article 7 of Real Decreto 639/2016 to report their location and public prices to the Ministry, and liquefied petroleum gas is one of the products in the dataset.

Is Spanish autogas the same quality as at home?

It is a propane and butane blend meeting the specification in Annex VII of Real Decreto 61/2006, with a minimum motor octane number of 89 and a maximum of 50 mg/kg of sulphur. At European level the quality of LPG sold as a road fuel is described by EN 589. The propane to butane ratio is not fixed, so energy per litre varies a little between suppliers and seasons.
